Street Level Community · San Francisco

Discovering our common humanity on the streets.

Faithful Fools is a live/work community in the Tenderloin. Through the arts, education, advocacy, and accompaniment, we meet people where they are — seeking personal change to create deep social change.

Our Mission

Called to a life of presence.

We are called to a life of presence that acknowledges each human's incredible worth. Aware of our judgments, we seek to meet people where they are through the arts, education, advocacy, and accompaniment.

We participate in shattering myths about those living in poverty — seeing the light, courage, intelligence, strength, and creativity of the people we encounter. Together, we discover on the streets our common humanity through which celebration, community, and healing occur.

"I don't believe in charity. I believe in solidarity. Charity is so vertical. It goes from the top to the bottom. Solidarity is horizontal. It respects the other person." — Eduardo Galeano, journalist & historian (1940–2015)
What Fools Do

Four practices, one shared purpose.

Our work is grounded in showing up — fully, honestly, and with humility — across four interconnected practices.

The Arts

Creative practice as a path to seeing, hearing, and honoring the dignity of every person we meet.

Education

The Institute for Street Level Learning fosters awareness and analysis of social conditions seen from the streets.

Advocacy

Standing with our neighbors to confront structures that perpetuate racism, poverty, and inequity.

Accompaniment

Walking alongside people in their lives — not as helpers from above, but as companions in shared humanity.

Our Approach

Solidarity is horizontal — not vertical.

We are committed to social change and community as practices grounded in solidarity. By that we mean understanding how each of us, and our wellbeing, is bound up with our neighbors, our city, and the earth as a whole.

  • Meeting people where they are — not where we think they should be.
  • Shattering myths about people living in poverty.
  • Healing historical injuries to human dignity.
  • Building community across difference, every day.
