A Central California Nonprofit — Since 2007

Every basset hound
deserves a second chapter.

Golden Empire Basset Rescue is a volunteer-run nonprofit finding loving homes for abandoned, abused, and unwanted basset hounds across Kern, Tulare, San Luis Obispo, and Inyo counties.

Our Mission

Compassion turned into community service.

Founded in 2007 by lifelong animal lover Jill Peterson, GEBR has spent nearly two decades finding forever homes for the breed she adored most.

Our hounds come to us from shelters and owner relinquishments. They receive veterinary care that includes necessary vaccinations, heartworm testing, and spay/neuter procedures — often at significant cost to our small nonprofit.

Each basset is typically placed into a volunteer foster home where their temperament, social needs, and any behavioral quirks are gently observed. From there, we work to match each hound with the right family — one where the special bond between companion animal and household can truly blossom.

Today, the Board of Directors continues the work Jill began, honoring her legacy one wagging tail at a time.

How You Can Help

Help comes in many forms.

The average vet bill for a rescued hound runs around $375 — and often more for medical cases. There are several meaningful ways to support our work.

Make a Donation

Tax-deductible donations cover vaccinations, heartworm testing, spay/neuter, and lifesaving medical care for the hounds in our program.

Foster a Hound

Open your home to a basset in transition. Foster families care for and evaluate hounds, helping us place each one in the right forever home.

Become a foster

Sponsor a Hound

Some hounds won’t leave foster care due to health or social needs. Ongoing sponsorships go directly to the specific dog you choose.

About GEBR

Carrying on a founder’s legacy.

Jill Peterson, the founder and president of Golden Empire Basset Rescue, passed away on May 31, 2014. Jill was a lifelong animal lover, and her compassion turned into community service when she launched GEBR — a nonprofit serving the Central California area.

The current Board of Directors has pledged to continue the rescue of these remarkable, long-eared hounds. We’re proud to be a member of West Coast BROAD (Basset Rescue Organizations Allied Division), a network of 501(c)(3) organizations working together to ensure every possible hound is rescued.
